The New Era
Process Blog

The New Era project is a Star Wars fan made film, based 4,000 years after episode IX. My role for this project is to do surface texturing and look development for a spaceship asset that is going to be used for one of the scenes of the film. Here is the process blog of how I created textures for the ship asset. The project is still currently in post production right now so this will be an updated blog.
Building Reference
For a project like this, a key part I put a lot of emphasis on was finding reference. The surface of the space ship is supposed to look like an everyday used, slightly dirty ship. The first area of reference that popped into my mind was military fighter jets and space ships. I used a lot more fighter jets as reference of the ship mainly because military jets are going to be affected by more elements because they aren't designed to go to space where there is mostly dust.

Beginning Stages
My role in the projected started once the modeler was done with the ship. First I wanted to do a couple different color schemes so that the director, vsfx supervisor, and producer had some options to choose from with the ships color scheme.

Version 1
Version 2

Version 3
In the end, they decided on the first color scheme. So I took the ship into Substance 3D Painter and starting painting on the base color and grime to the ship.
Texture Painting

Currently I am in the process of working on the textures on the rear portion of the ship. The dirt and edge scratches need to be toned down but I am happy with the direction it is going in.
Her is some more progress on the ship texturing. Most of the maps are put on the fuselage and have been graded and color corrected to resemble a better look of what the director, producer, and vsfx supervisor want. I messed around with connecting more of the specular roughness map into other areas of the shader like coat and metallic and I was impressed by the results of the ships look once the shader started inputting a metallic look over the materials. The silver clamp at the base of the front of the ship needs to be worked on more to give it a more used or worn look. Other than that the ship is headed in the right direction and once the wings are done being remodeled the final look will start coming together.
